I find this depressing...

I am in the group that is next to last when it comes to being very concerned about climate change, but number one (W. E. P! W. E. P!) among those with a "Climate change? Meh." attitude.

Why is this? I don't know.  But if I had to guess,  I'd say it is likely just a natural consequence of the misguided (and unbiblical) anti-science position of many evangelical Protestants.

Meanwhile, the arctic is on fire. Why?

  1. The arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet.
  2. This leads to the desiccation (drying) of vegetation, which then fuels the fires.
  3. This leads to enormous amounts of CO2 emissions, bigger than you would expect because...
  4. Many of the fires are burning through peat, which is unrivaled in its ability to store (safely, until burned)  carbon.
  5. Peat also has the charming feature that it burns slowly, peat fires can last for months, and they burn three-dimensionally.

Of course, that's if you believe the pointy headed scientists. My fellow American evangelical Protestants have a better theory: the arctic fires are God's punishment because we allowed a majority Democrat congress to be elected, which thwarted the god-given plans of our devoutly Christian, women-honoring, merciful president.

  1. Probably at least partly due to the anti-science position. May also be due to Al Gore being the most prominent spokesperson for climate change, for several years.
